Since trying to install Internet Explorer 5.5 download over version 5.0, my computer refuses to connect to any secure websites. If I look at the properties of C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe it says I have version 5.50. But if I click on Help, About Internet Explorer in Internet Explorer itself, I am told that I have version 5.0 and also 'Cipher Strength is 0-bit'. Could this be the problem, and if so, how can it be rectified?

It would seem that something went wrong during the upgrade. The '0-bit' cipher strength is certainly the reason why you cannot access secure sites. This problem occurs if any of the files schannel.dll, rsabase.dll or rsaenh.dll files are missing, damaged or the wrong version.
To resolve the problem, locate the file schannel.dll in the Windows System folder and rename it, changing the file extension from DLL to OLD. If you receive an 'Access is denied' error message when you attempt to rename the file, reboot into Safe Mode or MS-DOS Mode and try again.
Repeat the rename operation for the files rsabase.dll and rsaenh.dll. Then install either Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 or the appropriate version of the Microsoft Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack (128bit encryption), which you can obtain from www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.asp.
